Jay Heath scored 14 points, and Steffon Mitchell tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds as host Boston College remained unbeaten with a 59-33 victory against High Point on Wednesday night in Gotham Classic play in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

BC opened the game on a 10-0 run and scored the first 19 points of the second half. High Point only recovered from the first of those tears. A 3-pointer from Rob Peterson III brought the Panthers to within 16-14 of the Eagles with 6:27 remaining in the first half before another BC surge turned the tide once more.

Jared Hamilton and Derryck Thornton teamed for 12 points to fuel a 17-4 run that put the Eagles ahead 33-18 at intermission.

Hamilton had 12 points for the Eagles, while Denny Slay II led the Panthers with 10 points. Both teams grabbed 41 rebounds.

High Point missed its first 11 shots of the second half and fell behind by as many as 34 points down the stretch. The Panthers registered their first points of the second half when Thomas Jr. converted a three-point play at the 9:28 mark.

For the game, the Panthers were 12-for-48 (25 percent) from the field compared to 24-for-65 (36.9 percent) for the Eagles.

Nik Popovic scored four points to move to within 31 of 1,000 career points.

High Point shot 7-for-24 (29.2 percent) in the first half while committing 14 turnovers. With a 12-for-29 (41.4 percent) effort from the floor in the first 20 minutes, the Eagles were only slightly better, but ball control and staying out of the bonus provided advantages.

Wednesday marked the first meeting between the programs. Panthers coach Tubby Smith, a veteran of seven schools and 28 seasons, also had never previously faced the Eagles.
