Senior forward Reid Travis contributed 25 points and 14 rebounds to lead host Stanford to an 86-83 victory over Brigham Young on Wednesday in an NIT first-round matchup at Maples Pavilion.
Senior guard Dorian Pickens scored 17 points and freshman forward Oscar da Silva added 13 for the third-seeded Cardinal (19-15). Freshman guard Daejon Davis had 12 points and seven assists, and senior forward Michael Humphrey recorded 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Junior guard Elijah Bryant had 28 points and 10 rebounds for sixth-seeded BYU (24-11). Sophomore guard Jahshire Hardnett scored 12 points, sophomore forward Yoeli Childs had 11 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out, and sophomore guard TJ Haws had 10 points.
Stanford will play at second-seeded Oklahoma State on Monday in the second round.
The Cardinal had to sweat out a late charge by the Cougars, who used a 10-2 surge over a span of 25 seconds to pull within 85-83 with 11 seconds left. Davis split one of two free throws to make it a three-point margin, and Stanford held on when Haws was off the mark on a last-second shot.
Stanford led by two with under three minutes left in the third quarter before scoring the final seven of the stanza. Davis and Travis converted layups and da Silva drained a 3-pointer in the final seconds to make it 61-52 entering the fourth quarter.
Childs and Bryant made baskets early in the fourth quarter to pull the Cougars within five, but Travis scored consecutive hoops during an 11-2 run as the Cardinal took a 72-58 lead with 7:09 remaining.
BYU responded with 10 straight points, and Hardnett scored the final two baskets to move BYU with 72-68 with 3:14 left. A 3-pointer by Davis gave Stanford an eight-point advantage with 1:49 left, and the lead was 10 with 36 seconds left before the Cougars made one last charge.
Bryant scored 14 first-half points to help BYU hold a 39-35 lead at intermission.
Bryant knocked two 3-pointers late in the first quarter as the Cougars led 18-16 at the conclusion. BYU led by six early in the second quarter before Pickens and da Silva connected on 3-pointers to cap a 10-2 burst and give the Cardinal a 26-24 lead with 5:16 left.
Stanford led 30-29 after two free throws by Travis with 3:22 left before the Cougars rattled off the next 10 to take a nine-point advantage.
The Cardinal tallied the final five of the first half and first seven of the second half to take a 42-39 lead.
