Michael Young and Jamel Artis scored 30 points apiece, and Pittsburgh held on for a 112-106 win against Marshall to close out its nonconference slate Wednesday night at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh.

The Panthers led by as many as 29 points in the second half, but Marshall narrowed the gap down to five in the final minute. The win was the fifth in a row for Pittsburgh, which will enter Atlantic Coast Conference play at 11-2.

The Panthers put on an offensive clinic against the Thundering Herd (7-6). Pittsburgh scored 58 points in the first half, shot 52.1 percent from the floor for the game and hit 10 3-pointers.

Young and Johnson, both senior forwards, combined for more than half of the Panthers' points, shooting a combined 18 of 34 from the field and 19 of 28 from the foul line. Artis grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists, and Young had six boards to help the Panthers to a 43-39 advantage on the glass.

The Panthers had four players score in double figures. Senior forward Sheldon Jeter had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Cameron Johnson added 16 points and eight boards.

The Thundering Herd shot an impressive 49.3 percent from the floor for the game, but Marshall just could not quite keep pace with Pittsburgh's offense.

Sophomore guard C.J. Burks led Marshall with 25 points on a 7-for-10 shooting effort. Senior guard Steve Browning and senior forward Ryan Taylor both scored 22 points, and junior guard Jon Elmore added 19 points.

In coach Kevin Stallings' first season, the Panthers' only nonconference losses came to SMU and Steel City rival Duquesne. Pittsburgh will get ACC play started at home against No. 24 Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon.

Marshall begins Conference USA action Saturday at Florida International.
