Malik Pope collected 14 points and five rebounds in his first game of the season, and Jeremy Hemsley added 15 points to help San Diego State beat Cal 77-65 Monday in a neutral-court game at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, Calif.

Pope missed the Aztecs' first three games with a knee injury, and he did all his work Monday in just 19 minutes before fouling out. Trey Kell and Max Hoetzel added 11 points apiece for San Diego State.

San Diego State (3-1) committed just five turnovers in the game compared with 16 by the Bears.

Cal (2-1) dropped out of the Top 25 this week and is not likely to get back soon after Monday's result.

Charlie Moore, who scored a Cal-freshman-record 38 points against UC Irvine last Wednesday, had 17 points against the Aztecs.

Cal's Ivan Rabb, a preseason All-American, made his season debut after missing the first two games with a sprained toe. He finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Grant Mullins also returned for Cal after missing a game with neck injury, but Jabari Bird sat out his second straight game with back spasms. Mullins scored six points.

San Diego State took control in the first half, running out to a 19-point lead late in the half and taking a 42-25 advantage into halftime. Hemsley had 13 of his points in the first half.

The Bears shot 23 percent (6 of 26) in the first half and missed 13 straight shots in one stretch.

San Diego State held an 18-point lead with 9:49 left in the second half, but the Bears cut the margin to eight with 5:38 left on a Rabb bucket. Pope ended the Cal run with a 10-foot shot, and the Aztecs were not threatened thereafter.

The Aztecs hit 36.9 percent of their field-goal attempts while limiting the Bears to 32.1 percent shooting.
