Sophomore point guard Melo Trimble had 18 points and four assists and reserve guard Jared Nickens had 12 points as sixth-ranked Maryland overcame a slow start to beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 77-56 on Saturday at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Md.

Guard Rasheed Suliamon had six of his 10 assists in the first half for Maryland (9-1), which went on a 13-2 run to take a lead of 33-19. Freshman reserve center Diamond Stone added 12 points and six rebounds for the Terrapins.

Maryland-Eastern Shore cut the margin to 40-31 early in the second half. But the Terrapins grabbed a lead of 48-33 on a 3-pointer by Trimble and forward Robert Carter Jr. scored minutes later to make it 60-38 midway through the second half.

The visitors got as close as 71-56 with 1:33 left but Maryland had too many weapons as the Terrapins shot 50 percent from the floor while the Hawks made 13 turnovers and connected on just three of 17 three-point attempts. Trimble entered the game averaging 15.6 points and 5.5 assists per contest, the best marks on the team.

Maryland-Eastern Shore (1-9), rated No. 322 out of 351 schools in the Sagarin rankings through Friday, was paced by forward Dominique Elliott with 20 points and eight rebounds and guard Devin Martin with 11 points and six boards.

The Hawks fared well early on but Stone made a layup off an assist from Suliamon to give the Terrapins a lead of 26-17 with 6:26 left in the first half. Nickens hit a three-pointer to make it 33-19.

The Big Ten Conference Terps were coming off a 76-66 win over UConn on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden while the Hawks lost the same day at No. 1 Michigan State. The Hawks of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) have lost all eight road games this season.
