No. 6 Virginia 76, No. 22 Maryland 65: Malcolm Brogdon led the way with 18 points as the visiting Cavaliers never trailed en route to a victory over the Terrapins in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Justin Anderson contributed 16 points before leaving with an apparent ankle injury in the second half for Virginia (8-0), which has won its first eight games for the first time since 2003-04. Mike Tobey chipped in with 14 points, Anthony Gill had 11 and London Perrantes dished out seven assists for the Cavaliers, who shot 53.1 percent from the field.

Freshman Melo Trimble recorded a team-high 16 points despite going only 2-of-9 from the field for Maryland (7-1), which was outrebounded 34-22. Jake Layman registered 14 points, Dion Wiley had 12 and Richaud Pack added 11 for the Terrapins.

It took less than nine minutes for Virginia to build a 10-point lead and Anderson scored 11 in the opening 20 minutes as the Cavaliers settled for a 37-29 edge at intermission. Virginia made 16-of-29 from the field and Maryland stayed in it by draining 12-of-15 free throws in the first half.

The Cavaliers slowly established control in the second half, pushing their lead to 61-44 with just under eight minutes to go after Marial Shayok’s 3-pointer and a Gill layup capped a 7-0 run. A pair of 3-pointers by Pack helped Maryland pull within 10, but Brogdon’s trey extended the lead back to 70-56 and Virginia cruised from there.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Virginia F Darion Atkins fell hard on his back late in the first half and did not return, finishing with four points. … Maryland F Evan Smotrycz, who averaged 11 points last season, sat out the contest with an ankle injury after returning two games ago from a broken foot. … The Cavaliers have won seven of the last eight games against the Terrapins, who have moved to the Big Ten after a long run in the ACC.
