Miami (Fla.) 84, Howard 49: Sheldon McClellan scored 19 points and Angel Rodriguez added 16 as the Hurricanes rolled to a victory over the visiting Bison.

McClellan, a transfer from Texas, made 8-of-12 shots from the field and Kansas State transfer Rodriguez added three assists and four steals. Manu Lecomte contributed 14 points and Tonye Jekiri grabbed 11 rebounds for Miami, which made 9-of-23 from 3-point range.

James Daniel, picked as the MEAC preseason Player of the Year, was held to 3-of-15 from the floor and 10 points as Howard shot 28.6 from the field. Damon Collins led the way for the Bison with 12 points and six rebounds.

Howard missed its first 15 shots and Lecomte completed a four-point play that highlighted a 17-1 run to start the game for the Hurricanes. The Bison trimmed their deficit to 19-8 before Miami ran off 18 of the next 20 points – seven by McClellan -- and led by as much as 28 before settling for a 45-21 lead at intermission.

The Hurricanes continued to pull away in the second half and when freshmen Deandre Burnett drained a 3-pointer with a little over 12 minutes left they led 63-29. Miami, which lost its opener to St. Francis (N.Y.) last season, made 21-of-25 free throws.
