Stanford 60, Kansas 57: Dwight Powell led a balanced offense with 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Cardinal held off second-seeded Kansas in the third round of the NCAA tournament in St. Louis.

Chasson Randle contributed 13 points and six steals for No. 10 seed Stanford (23-12), which plays 11th- seeded Dayton on Thursday in the South regional semifinals in Memphis, Tenn. Stefan Nastic and Anthony Brown added 10 points apiece for the Cardinal, who held Kansas to 32.8 percent shooting.

Tarik Black led the way with 18 points before fouling out for Kansas (25-10) and Conner Frankamp added 12, but missed a long 3-pointer at the buzzer that could have tied it. Perry Ellis had nine points and leading scorer Andrew Wiggins was held to four on 1-of-6 shooting for the Jayhawks.

The Cardinal led 47-40 before Naadir Tharpe’s 3-pointer and an Ellis dunk highlighted a 9-2 run that tied the game with a little over five minutes left. Powell and Josh Huestis scored inside to give Stanford a 53-49 lead and the Cardinal pushed the lead to seven with 32.4 seconds left before holding off a late rally.

Stanford led by as much as seven in the first half, but the Jayhawks scored eight of the final nine – including two 3-pointers by Frankamp – to edge in front 24-22 at intermission. The Cardinal fell behind by five before running off 13 of the next 15 – six by Randle – to take a 36-30 lead with 14:50 to go.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Nastic made 4-of-5 shots against Kansas and is 22-of-24 from the field over his last six games. … Kansas freshman C Joel Embiid, who averages 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds, dressed for the game but missed his sixth straight with a stress fracture in his lower back. … Stanford also made the Sweet 16 in its last NCAA tournament appearance in 2008.
