Stephen F. Austin 77, Virginia Commonwealth 75 (OT): Desmond Haymon scored 17 points, including a four-point play with 3.6 seconds left in regulation, and the Lumberjacks rallied past the Rams in a second-round NCAA tournament game in San Diego.

Jacob Parker scored 22 points and Thomas Walkup collected 12 points and 10 boards for No. 12 seed Stephen F. Austin (32-2), which posted its first NCAA tournament victory and advanced to Sunday’s third-round game in the South regional against No. 4 seed UCLA. Nikola Gajic added nine points and six rebounds to help the Lumberjacks extend their winning streak to 29 games.

Treveon Graham led fifth-seeded VCU (26-9) with 19 points and seven rebounds while Jordan Burgess added 14 points. JeQuan Lewis chipped in 13 points and Juvonte Reddic had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Rams, who led by 10 with six minutes to play in regulation.

Stephen F. Austin shot 60 percent in the first half and led 36-30 at the break after Parker capped a 10-2 run with a 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Lumberjacks committed just five of their 17 turnovers in the first half against VCU’s pressure defense, but the Rams turned up the intensity in the second half and used a 24-3 run to pull ahead 54-43 with just over eight minutes remaining.

The Lumberjacks weathered the storm and cut the deficit to 62-59 with 1:24 remaining before forcing overtime when Haymon converted a four-point play after making a 3-pointer in front of the Stephen F. Austin bench. Haymon hit another 3-pointer midway through the extra period, and Parker scored with 1:10 remaining to give the Lumberjacks a 76-73 advantage.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Rams played their second straight game without reserve guard Melvin Johnson, who suffered a sprained knee in last Saturday’s win over George Washington in the Atlantic 10 tournament. … Stephen F. Austin, making its second NCAA tournament appearance, shot 52.9 percent from the field and outrebounded the Rams 35-29. … VCU lost for the eighth time in 31 postseason games since 2009 under coach Shaka Smart.
