No. 19 Massachusetts 66, Saint Joseph's 62: Chaz Williams scored 22 points as the Minutemen rallied for an Atlantic 10 victory over the visiting Hawks.

Williams made 7-of-10 free throws and had four assists and Raphiael Putney second all 11 of his points in the second half for the Minutemen (13-1, 1-0). Maxie Esho had 12 points, including the a go-ahead dunk with one minute left, while Cady Lalanne was limited to four points and four rebounds due to foul trouble.

Halil Kanacevic notched 19 points, 13 rebounds and six assists and Langston Galloway had 18 points and five rebounds for the Hawks (9-5, 0-1), who committed a season-high 17 turnovers but won the rebounding battle 35-28. Freshman DeAndre Bembry added 16 points and eight rebounds.

Lalanne's foul trouble was the difference early in the first half as the Minutemen struggled to adjust without the junior's inside presence, leading to a 10-2 run and 16-7 advantage for the Hawks with just seven minutes elapsed. Massachusetts answered with its own 10-2 run behind six points from Williams and would take its first lead at 23-21 on a basket by Derek Gordon, but the Hawks scored eight of the final 10 points, including five by Kanacevic, to post a 31-28 lead at halftime.

Putney scored nine points in first six minutes of the second half as the Minutemen opened up a 41-35 lead, but a heated timeout by Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli ignited his team and particularly Kanacevic, who scored 10 points as the Hawks regained a 57-48 lead with six minutes left. Williams put the Minutemen on his back, scoring eight points and denying Galloway the ball in the final minute, and Trey Davis canned three late free throws to seal the improbable win.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Williams collected his second foul with one minute left in the first half and took a seat after recording 11 points and two assists. ... Galloway scored 11 points and hit three of the Hawks' five 3-pointers in the first half. ... Ronald Roberts Jr., the Hawks' second-leading scorer and top rebounder, left the game early in the second half with back spasms and did not return.
