No. 2 Syracuse 72, Virginia Tech 52: C.J. Fair scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures as the Orange pulled away in the second half to notch their fifth straight victory over the host Hokies.

Jerami Grant turned in his second career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Tyler Ennis added 13 points and a game-high seven assists for Syracuse (15-0, 2-0 ACC), which owned a 41-25 edge on the boards and matched a season low with seven turnovers. Trevor Cooney, who leads the conference with 48 3-pointers, hit three more Tuesday and contributed 11 points.

C.J. Barksdale was the only player to finish in double figures for Virginia Tech (8-6, 1-1) with 12 points. Leading scorer Jarell Eddie was held to six points while the Hokies, who entered Tuesday tied with Baylor as the fifth-best 3-point shooting team in the country, shot 29.2 percent beyond the arc.

Virginia Tech enjoyed an early three-point advantage before Cooney knocked down two 3-pointers during a 22-7 surge that allowed Syracuse to take a 12-point lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half. However, the Orange converted only one more field goal before the break and saw the margin cut in half by intermission at 35-29 following a 3-pointer by Adam Smith.

Barksdale connected on his first three field-goal attempts as Virginia Tech narrowed the gap to four with about 15 minutes left, but Syracuse rolled off the next 16 points over the next eight-plus minutes as the Orange’s advantage quickly ballooned to 60-40. The Hokies could get no closer than 18 points thereafter.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Syracuse opened 15-0 for the third time in the last four seasons. … Eddie, who ranks seventh in the ACC in scoring, was held 11 points below his season average. … Orange F DaJuan Coleman – a regular starter – appeared late after missing the previous two contests while recovering from a bone bruise near his left knee, but did not score.
