No. 5 Arizona 73, Cal Poly 62: Aaron Gordon had 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots in his college debut to help the host Wildcats hold off a strong push from the Mustangs.

Gabe York scored 12 points and Brandon Ashley, Nick Johnson and Kaleb Tarczewski had 11 points apiece for Arizona (1-0), which finished with six players in double figures. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson was the other, finishing with 10 points.

Kyle Odister scored 21 points and Chris Eversley had 17 for Cal Poly (0-1). Dave Nwaba scored all 12 of his points in the first half for the Mustangs.

The Wildcats held a narrow 37-34 lead at the half as Ashley led the way with nine points for Arizona. The Mustangs scored the first two points of second half to get within one, but Arizona began to stretch its lead.

A 3-point play by Gordon with 9:47 remaining gave the Wildcats their first double-digit advantage 56-45. Arizona hurt itself at the free throw line, shooting 20-for-36.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Mustangs, who averaged just 9.4 turnovers last season, second-best in country, finished with 11 giveaways … Arizona is the highest-ranked opponent in Cal Poly history. … Tarczewski did not start as Arizona coach Sean Miller elected to go with a smaller lineup against Cal Poly.
