Treveon Graham scored 17 points to lead five players in double figures as the second-seeded Rams withstood a furious rally and beat the 10th-seeded Hawks in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Troy Daniels scored 14 points and Rob Brandenburg had 13 to help Virginia Commonwealth (25-7), which will play sixth-seeded Massachusetts in Saturday’s semifinals. Darius Theus and Melvin Johnson chipped in 12 points apiece for the Rams, who finished second in the conference with a 12-4 record and earned a first-round bye.

Carl Jones scored a game-high 29 points and Langston Galloway had 25, including five 3-pointers, for Saint Joseph’s (18-13). Halil Kanacevic had 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Hawks, who came in having won three of their last four games, including a 58-57 victory over seventh-seeded Xavier in Thursday’s first round.

Saint Joseph’s, which trailed 33-23 at halftime, pulled within four points, 80-76, on Galloway’s 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining. Virginia Commonwealth’s Briante Weber dunked for an 82-76 lead with five seconds left before Saint Joseph’s Papa Ndao made a 3-pointer in the final second.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Weber, the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, came in needing three steals and registered five to break Rolando Lamb’s 28-year-old school record of 88 steals. Weber leads the conference with 91. … Saint Joseph’s, which committed 17 turnovers to Virginia Commonwealth’s 13, made nine 3-pointers to the Rams’ 11 from long distance. … Virginia Commonwealth, which moved to the Atlantic 10 this year from the Colonial Athletic Association, improved to 3-1 all-time against the Hawks, including a 92-86 victory in overtime on Jan. 17 in Richmond.
