Rutgers 76, DePaul 57: Wally Judge hit all nine of his field-goal attempts – tying a Big East tournament record – as the Scarlet Knights shot a season-high 61.1 percent from the field to defeat the Blue Demons in the first round of the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden.

Judge posted his third double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Myles Mack added 19 points for Rutgers (15-15), which outscored DePaul 48-28 inside the paint and will play Notre Dame in the second round Wednesday.

Cleveland Melvin scored 25 points while Brandon Young tallied 15 for DePaul (11-21).

The Scarlet Knights, who shot 60.9 percent but committed 12 turnovers in the first half, continued their torrid shooting and began to pull away early in the second once they solved their ball-handling woes. Rutgers hit nine consecutive shots – seven of which came after Young knotted the game with a three-point play at 36 – during a 16-3 spurt.

DePaul managed to crawl within 58-50 on a layup from Melvin with 8:47 remaining, but Judge and Mack combined to score eight of the Scarlet Knights’ next 11 points while the Blue Demons missed four of their next five shots and committed four turnovers. Jerome Seagears’ 3-pointer with 2:54 left capped a 14-4 run and left Rutgers with a 72-54 cushion.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Judge’s 9-for-9 effort from the field matched Boston College’s Craig Smith (2005) and Villanova’s Ricky Wright (2001) for the best in tournament history. … DePaul allowed four of its last seven opponents to shoot better than 60 percent. … Judge’s double-double was his first since he opened the season with two against Saint Peter’s and Sacred Heart.
