No. 23 Saint Mary’s 80, Santa Clara 67: Matthew Dellavedova scored 21 points en route to becoming the all-time career scorer leader for the host Gaels.

Stephen Holt contributed 13 points, Mitchell Young scored 10 of his 12 in the first half and Jorden Page added 10 for Saint Mary’s (26-5, 14-2 WCC), which outscored Santa Clara 14-5 over the final four minutes.

Marc Trasolini had 21 points and eight rebounds, Kevin Foster scored 14 points and Evan Roquemore finished with 11 to lead the Broncos (21-10, 9-7), who will be seeded fourth in the upcoming WCC tournament.

Santa Clara led by five points on three occasions during the opening half but it was Gaels who headed to the locker room leading 36-35 after the Broncos converted one field goal attempt over the final six minutes.

A 3-pointer by Holt gave Saint Mary’s its biggest lead at the time 55-48 with 10:25 left, but the Broncos came back with a 10-2 run to briefly move ahead. Dellavedova took the lead back with two free throws with 7:19 left and the Gaels shot 14-for-16 from the line the rest of the way to extend the lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The NCAA announced Friday that Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett would be suspended the first five games next season for failing "to promote an atmosphere for compliance" during an investigation surrounding a former assistant coach, and Bennett acted “unethically when he knowingly committed recruiting violations for three prospects." The Gaels will be allowed to participate in this month's WCC and NCAA tournaments, but can’t play in preseason or in-season tournaments the next two seasons. … Dellavedova has 1,892 points in his career at Saint Mary’s, surpassing the 1,874 Daniel Kickert scored from 2002-06. … The Broncos fell to 13-2 when shooting a better percentage from beyond the arc.
