Chase Tapley hit a 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds left to lift the host Aztecs over the Broncos in Mountain West play.

Boise State’s Derrick Marks missed the second shot of a 1-and-1 free-throw situation with 11.8 seconds left to present the opportunity for San Diego State (17-5, 5-3 Mountain West) to stave off the upset. James Rahon scored 16 points, Jamaal Franklin had 14 and Tapley scored 12 for the Aztecs.

Marks and Mikey Thompson scored 16 points apiece for Boise State (15-7, 3-5), which recovered from a 17-point, first-half deficit. Thompson missed a last-second shot after Tapley’s go-ahead hoop.

Boise State trailed by 10 at halftime and took its first lead of the contest at 56-54 on a 3-pointer by Marks with 5:43 remaining. Thompson’s 3-pointer gave the Broncos a 61-58 lead with 3:20 remaining, but Boise State scored just one point down the stretch.

San Diego State started strong and had a 34-17 lead after a basket by DeShawn Stephens with 5:58 left in the half. The Aztecs led 38-28 at halftime.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
San Diego State was 8-for-18 from the free-throw line. … Boise State G Igor Hadziomerovic missed the game because of illness. … Aztecs PG Xavier Thames (back) sat out for the fourth time in eight games.
