Miami 54, Maryland 47: Kenny Kadji scored 14 points as the Hurricanes overcame a poor shooting performance in their ACC home opener to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Kadji moved into the starting lineup after fellow senior Reggie Johnson went down with a broken thumb last month. Julian Gamble, a 6-10 junior who has also seen increased playing time since Johnson’s injury, finished with eight points, nine rebounds and four blocks for Miami (12-3, 3-0 ACC).

Dez Wells scored 18 points and Alex Len finished with 16 points and nine rebounds for the Terrapins (13-3, 1-2), who have lost two straight after winning 13 in a row.

Both teams combined to shoot 14-for-57 from the field in the first half (24.5 percent) and 2-for-10 from the free throw line as Miami took a 19-14 halftime lead. Maryland stayed within single digits until a 7-0 run by the Hurricanes gave Miami a 39-29 lead with 5:22 remaining. The Terrapins could never get back within one possession after that.

Miami, which came in shooting 67.9 percent from the free throw line and 34.6 from 3-point range, shot 5-for-13 at the line (38.5 percent) and 5-for-20 from beyond the arc (25 percent). Maryland finished with just four assists while shooting 18-for-57 from the field (31.6 percent).

GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami averaged .58 points per possession in the first half, Maryland averaged .41. … Maryland PG Seth Allen started for the second time this season, leaving Pe’Shon Howard to come off the bench. Allen finished with four points and no assists in 29 minutes. Howard, who started 14 of the first 15 games this season, missed all five field goal attempts and went scoreless with one assist. … Shaquille Cleare was expected to make his second career start at forward for the Terrapins, but he experienced back spasms that caused him to miss Saturday’s practice. He was replaced in the starting lineup by James Padgett, who missed all three of his shots and scored one point. Cleare played four minutes and went scoreless.
