Rutgers 67, No. 22 Pittsburgh 62: Eli Carter came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points as the Scarlet Knights survived a sloppy second-half performance to edge the visiting Panthers.

Pittsburgh cut a 14-point deficit to 55-53 with 3:20 remaining before Rutgers (10-3, 1-1 Big East) scored the next six points – four by Carter. Myles Mack added 11 points for the Scarlet Knights, who had 12 of their 18 turnovers in the second half.

J.J. Moore scored 14 points and Tray Woodall added 11 and eight assists for the Panthers (12-3, 0-2), who pulled within 64-59 with 17.3 seconds left. Jerome Seagears answered with a pair of free throws to seal Pittsburgh’s second straight defeat.

Rutgers scored 19 of the game’s first 24 points and weathered a rally by the Panthers before settling for a 39-25 lead at halftime. Carter scored 14 points and Mack had nine to lead the Scarlet Knights, who were 6-of-10 from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes and missed all four attempts in the second half.

Pittsburgh leading scorer Talib Zanna, who did not score in the first half, had seven of his nine points during a 9-0 run to start the second half. Rutgers, which finished 17-of-20 at the free-throw line, turned the ball over six times in its first eight possessions after the break.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Scarlet Knights improved to 7-1 at home and snapped Pittsburgh’s six-game win streak at the Rutgers Athletic Center. … Panthers F Lamar Patterson, who had averaged 12.2 points the previous 10 games, was 0-of-4 from 3-point range and scored five points. … Woodall’s eight assists gives him 500 for his career.
