Winston Shepard added 11 points for San Diego State (12-2), which cruised to the victory despite losing starting point guard Xavier Thames to a back injury in the first half. The Aztecs have won 31 consecutive games against programs from California.

Tapley’s layup capped an early 16-5 run that gave San Diego State a 25-12 lead with nine minutes left in the first half. The Roadrunners pulled within 28-20 with 4:50 left before the Aztecs scored the final nine points for a 17-point halftime lead.

The lead reached 20 on Tapley’s jumper with 14:21 to play and San Diego State led comfortably the rest of the way.
