Deshaun Thomas had 21 points and nine rebounds as the host Buckeyes pulled away late against the upset-minded Eagles.

Winthrop (4-5) trailed 52-47 after Gideon Gamble hit a 3-pointer with 9:15 left, but Ohio State (9-1) answered with an 10-0 run while holding the Eagles scoreless for over the next 6:26 to put the game out of reach.

Derrick Henry had 12 points and Joab Jerome added eight points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles, who trailed 31-30 at halftime. Winthrop was outrebounded 36-32 in its first game against a top 10 opponent since 2006.

Lenzelle Smith, Jr. added 14 points for the Buckeyes, who won their fifth straight game heading into Saturday’s showdown at home against No. 8 Kansas.

Smith’s basket with 3:58 remaining extended Ohio State’s lead to 62-47 before Winthrop scored eight unanswered points to make a late charge. The Eagles committed 14 turnovers compared to just five for Ohio State.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ohio State won its 39th straight non-conference home game. … Winthrop was 10-of-26 (38.5 percent) from 3-point range, while Ohio State was 6-for-21 (28.6 percent). Both teams shot under 40 percent from the field... The Buckeyes entered the game with a scoring margin of plus 22.7 points.
