Brigham Young 61, Utah 58: Matt Carlino scored a season-high 19 points as the host Cougars rallied from 12-point first-half deficit.

Carlino, the starting point guard last season and third-leading scorer before losing his starting role to Craig Cusick after five games this season, came off the bench to shoot 5-for-10 from 3-point range and collect a team-high five assists and three steals for BYU (6-3). Tyler Haws chipped in 14 points and Brandon Davies had 11 for the Cougars.

Utah (6-3) was led by freshman forward Jordan Loveridge, who scored 14 points. Glen Dean added 10 for the Utes.

Carlino, who recorded the only 30-point game for the Cougars last season, sank back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the score at 52 with 4:45 remaining. Cusick then hit another 3 to give BYU its first lead since the 14:11 mark of the opening half 55-53.

Loveridge was fouled on a 3-point shot and made the free throws to give Utah its last lead 56-55 with 3:48 left, but the Cougars went 5-for-6 from the line down the stretch and the Utes went the final 7:05 without a field goal.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Loveridge came into the game fifth in the Pac-12 in rebounding at 8.1 but did not record a rebound. … BYU improved its record to 128-125 all-time against Utah. …Utah forward Jason Washburn came into the game 30-for-39 from the field this season, including 13-for-14 in the last two games. He converted his first four field goals against BYU, but missed his final shot with the Utes trailing by one with 26 seconds left.
