Amric Fields scored 16 points and Kyan Anderson added 13 as the host Horned Frogs slid by the Mustangs in the season opener for both squads.

Garlon Green had 10 points and seven rebounds as TCU was victorious in Trent Johnson’s debut as coach. Johnson left LSU for the Horned Frogs after former coach Jim Christian took the Ohio University post.

Brian Bennett had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Cal Poly, which shot just 35.2 percent from the field.

TCU shot just 41.9 percent but used a 10-2 run to take a 38-30 lead with 9:25 to play. The Mustangs pulled within 44-43 on Chris O’Brien’s 3-pointer with 2:26 left but Fields hit a jumper and Anderson drained a 3-pointer and added two free throws to give the Horned Frogs an eight-point advantage.

Both teams struggled to score early and Cal Poly led 5-3 midway through the first half. TCU took its first lead on Green’s basket with 34 seconds left but Drake U’u scored on a layup with three seconds remaining to give the Mustangs a 21-20 halftime lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Horned Frogs began the contest by missing 10 of 11 field-goal attempts. … Cal Poly has gone 36 consecutive contests without a player scoring 20 or more points. … Arkansas transfer Devonta Abron was scoreless in his TCU debut, missing both his shots and committing three turnovers.
