Pittsburgh 68, Butler 62: Lamar Patterson scored five of his 13 points in overtime and helped the Panthers earn a spot in the final of the College Basketball Invitational.
The outcome served as revenge for the Panthers, who were beaten by Butler in the third round of the NCAA tournament last year. The Panthers, who have won five of their last six games, advance to the CBI’s best-of-three final series to play Washington State.
Patterson, who also had 10 rebounds, hit a short jumper with 1:31 left in overtime that gave Pitt the lead to stay. The Panthers (20-16) also got 15 points and eight rebounds from Talib Zanna, 14 points from J.J. Moore and 12 points from Tray Woodall.
Butler (22-15) was led by Khyle Marshall with 22 points and eight rebounds and Andrew Smith, who had 19 points and six rebounds. The Bulldogs had a chance to win it in regulation, but Roosevelt Jones, a freshman who shoots only 50.9 percent from the line, missed two free throws with four seconds remaining.
The first half was tight for 20 minutes, with neither team holding more than a six-point lead. Neither team shot the ball very well in the opening half and each made only a pair of treys, as Pitt took a 26-24 lead into the locker room.
Game notebook: Pitts’ Ashton Gibbs was 0-for-8 from the field during regulation. It was his only scoreless showing of the season and ended a streak of six straight double-figure games. . . . Pitt outrebounded Butler 45-37, with 18 of those coming on the offensive end. . . . Pitt made 16 of 20 free throws, while Butler made only 15 of 26.
