Brock Motum scored a game-high 24 points and the visiting Cougars pulled away in the final minutes of a first-round game in the College Basketball Invitational.

Four players scored in double figures for Washington State (16-16), which shot 60.4 percent from the field and advanced to face the winner of Wednesday’s game between North Dakota State and Wyoming.

The Cougars led by as many as 14 in the first half before San Francisco (20-14) cut the lead to 35-34 at halftime. Cole Dickerson scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half for the Dons, who lost for just the fifth time in 17 home games.

Washington State, which never trailed in the second half, led by four with 5:49 remaining and broke it open as the Dons went the next four minutes without a field goal.

San Francisco was paced by Michael Williams’ 20 points, which included five 3-pointers. Angelo Caloiaro added 15 points and Dickerson grabbed 11 rebounds for the Dons, who lost to Saint Mary’s in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference tournament.

The Cougars made 25 of their 28 free-throw attempts (89.9 percent), while San Francisco shot 36.2 percent (21 of 58) from the field and 69.4 percent (25 of 36) from the foul line. Washington State's Reggie Moore had 18 points, including 12 from the foul line.

Game Notebook: The Cougars improved to 2-5 in the state of California this season. ... San Francisco’s Cody Doolin, who had a career-high 28 points in his last game against Saint Mary’s, finished with nine points on 2-of-9 shooting. ... Washington State, which lost to Oregon State in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament, improved to 14-11 all-time in postseason play. ... The teams were meeting for the first time since the 1950-51 season.
