Rutgers 61, St. John’s 58: Eli Carter scored 15 points and Dane Miller stepped up at the end as the host Scarlet Knights moved up one spot in the final Big East standings.

Miller finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Myles Mack hit a key 3-pointer for Rutgers (14-17, 6-12 Big East), which has won two of its last three to drag some momentum into next week’s Big East tournament.

Trailing by a point with 41 seconds left, Rutgers called a timeout and drew up a play for Carter. After bleeding the shot clock down, Carter hoisted up an off-target jumper.

Miller was there to grab the rebound, dunking it back for the winning basket.

Carter’s two free throws six seconds later sealed it.

St. John’s (13-18, 6-12) took a 56-52 lead on a dunk by God’sgift Achiuwa but Miller tipped in an offensive rebound and Mack buried a 3-pointer out of a timeout to give the Scarlet Knights the lead back 57-56 with 1:17 to play.

Achiuwa was there again for the Red Storm, grabbing an offensive board and laying it back up to retake the lead 33 seconds later.
