ST. JOHN’S 61, NOTRE DAME 58: Moe Harkless scored 22 points, Amir Garrett hit a driving layup with the shot clock running down and the Red Storm ended the 18th-ranked Irish's nine-game winning streak.

D’Angelo Harrison added 15 points for the Red Storm (13-16, 6-10 Big East), which earned a third straight win and ended an 11-game losing streak to ranked teams. St. John’s, which starts five freshmen, had been 0-10 against Top 25 teams this season – the worst mark in the country.

Garrett helped the Red Storm hold off Notre Dame by hitting driving layup with two seconds on the shot clock, which gave St. John’s a 61-58 lead with 10 seconds to play. Notre Dame had a chance to tie, but Alex Dragicevich’s 3-pointer from the left wing hit off the front of the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Jack Cooley scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half and finished with 10 rebounds for the Irish (20-9, 12-4). Notre Dame never led and shot just 4 of 35 from 3-point range en route to its first loss since Jan. 16.

It was Notre Dame’s fourth straight loss to St. John’s at Madison Square Garden as a ranked team.

St. John’s led by as many as 14 points in the second half before the Irish staged a rally by going inside to Cooley and Scott Martin, who had 18 points. Martin’s layup off an inbounds pass cut the deficit to 59-58 with 39 seconds left, but the Irish couldn't overcome the poor shooting day.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Both coaching staffs wore blue bowties to support prostate cancer. St. John’s coach Steve Lavin, who underwent prostate surgery on Oct. 6, said he is cancer-free and has vowed to return next season. … The Irish attempted more 3-pointers than two point field goals (14) in the opening 20 minutes.
