NEW MEXICO 77, SAN DIEGO STATE 67: Kendall Williams scored 21 points and Drew Gordon had 17 points and 17 rebounds as the visiting Lobos survived a late charge by the No. 15 Aztecs to gain sole ownership of first place in the Mountain West.

Williams made 5 of 6 3-point attempts for New Mexico (21-4, 7-2 MWC), which won its sixth straight game and snapped a four-game losing streak to San Diego State (20-5, 6-3).

New Mexico led by six at halftime and took control early in the second half when Williams hit two 3-pointers during a 16-1 run. The Lobos shot 28 of 56 from the field, including 10 of 19 from beyond the arc.

Jamaal Franklin had 16 points and 10 rebounds for San Diego State, which lost consecutive games for the first time in 79 games dating back to January 2010.

San Diego State’s top scorer, Chase Tapley, was held scoreless before scoring seven points in a 2:16 span to bring the Aztecs to within 70-64 with 2:33 remaining, but the Lobos were able to secure the win at the free throw line.

The Lobos avenged their 75-70 loss to San Diego State on Jan. 18 while outrebounding the Aztecs 33-29. San Diego State was only 3 for 14 from 3-point range.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Lobos have outscored their opponents by an average of 20.8 points during their six-game winning streak. …Tapley’s streak of scoring in double figures ended at 18 games. …The Lobos return home to face No. 11 UNLV on Saturday. … San Diego State lost at home for the first time in 45 games against unranked teams, and the Aztecs fell to 23-1 at home against current Mountain West members. ...
