Freshman Joe Coleman scored a career-high 23 points Sunday as Minnesota downed Penn State 80-66 at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Coleman went 13-of-14 from the foul line while Rodney Williams added 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Golden Gophers (14-5, 2-4 Big Ten), who won consecutive road games for the first time since January 2009.

Despite allowing a season-high-tying 15 offensive rebounds to the smaller Nittany Lions, the Golden Gophers used their substantial size advantage to block seven shots to add to their conference-leading total and outscore Penn State in the paint, 32-14.

Minnesota stretched a 33-31 halftime lead to double digits with an 11-2 run to open the second half.

Penn State (9-10, 1-5) rallied with eight straight points to move to within 44-41, but the Gophers responded with 11 unanswered points – highlighted by a five-point possession when Rodney Williams hit two free throws following a flagrant foul and Austin Hollins drilled a 3-pointer 14 seconds later.

The Nittany Lions would get no closer than five points the rest of the way.

Cammeron Woodyard came off the bench to score a career-high 22 points while Tim Frazier – the Big Ten’s second-leading scorer – added 20 points for Penn State, which fell to 7-4 at home this season.
