Maryland had a poor shooting night but benefited from second-chance opportunities to secure its first ACC win, 70-64, over visiting Wake Forest on Wednesday night.

It took the conference’s leading scorer, Terrell Stoglin, 18 shots to get his 20 points. The Terrapins, though, had a rather easy time cleaning up his messes, pulling down 21 offensive rebounds. Those boards proved crucial midway through the first half when Maryland (11-4, 1-1 ACC) turned an 11-9 deficit into a 34-16 advantage with less than four minutes left.

Travis McKie scored 25 points and had seven rebounds for Wake Forest (10-6, 1-1 ACC), which trimmed a 16-point halftime deficit to four late in the game before Maryland held on with late free throws. McKie had to be a one-man wrecking crew as teammate C.J. Harris, the ACC’s second-leading scorer, struggled for the second straight game. Harris hasn’t looked like the same sharpshooter since returning from a groin injury that sidelined him for Wake’s last non-conference game. Harris started 1 for 5 from the floor on Saturday and went 1 for his first 7 on Wednesday before finishing with 10 points.

Sean Mosley scored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting to extend Maryland's home winning streak to seven, while Ashton Pankey had nine points and nine rebounds. The Terps needed just about every one of them as the Demon Deacons allowed just 24 percent shooting in the second half. It was a big improvement for Wake, which entered ACC play last in scoring defense.
