Kevin Jones had a team-high 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting to lead West Virginia to a 83-48 non-league victory over Morehead State at Charleston Civic Center.

Jones, coming off a career-high 29 points and 13 rebounds in the Mountaineers’ win over Alcorn State last week, netted 12 of his points in the first half as West Virginia (3-1) took a 39-22 lead into halftime.

The Mountaineers opened the second half with a 13-2 run to extend the lead to 52-24 with 16 minutes left as Morehead State struggled from the field. The Eagles, who reached the 100-point plateau in their most recent victory against Asbury, converted just 38.3 percent of their field-goal attempts and were held to a season-low for points.

Darryl Bryant had 14 points and Deniz Kilicli and Gary Browne each added 10 for West Virginia, which will wrap up a five-game homestand later this week against Akron before facing a difficult road stretch against Mississippi State and Kansas State.

The Mountaineers went 52.8 percent from the field, including 8-of-20 from 3-point range. However, they converted just 19-of-31 (61.3%) free-throw attempts, which will be a concern going forward especially with a roster that includes eight freshmen.

Terrance Hill had a game-high 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting for Morehead State (1-3), which has lost its games by an average of 26.
