Robbie Hummel’s 3-pointer with 20.9 seconds left lifted Purdue to a 91-90 victory over Iona on Thursday in the first round of the Puerto Rico Tip-off.

The Boilermakers (3-0), who improved to 3-0 all-time in the invitational tournament, will take on Temple on Friday at 1 p.m. ET in a semifinal matchup. The Owls defeated Western Michigan, 69-55, earlier in the day.

Hummel, a senior forward, finished with a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds and Lewis Jackson added 17 for the Boilermakers, who are off to their fifth straight 3-0 start.

Lamont Jones hit a runner in the lane with 33.6 seconds left to give Iona a 90-88 lead, but Hummel responded on the ensuing possession with a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Iona (0-1) had a chance to re-take the lead on the next possession but turned the ball over underneath the basket. Then, after Purdue's Ryne Smith missed a pair of free throw attempts with 3 seconds left, the Gaels had a chance at a half-court heave for the win.

But it missed.

Jones finished with a team-high 17 points for Iona, the favorite to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Purdue led by as many as seven points in the second half, but Iona wouldn’t go away as both teams traded 3-pointers. Purdue, backed by Smith’s five 3-pointers, went 12-for-25 from beyond the arc while Iona converted 9 of 17 3-point attempts.

Taaj Ridley had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Gaels. Scott Machado added 14 points and 11 assists before fouling out with 2:51 left, with Purdue up 86-84. Michael Glover had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Four players finished in double figures for the Boilermakers, including Kelsey Barlow, who had 8 of his 14 points in the first half for the Boilermakers, who improved to 25-16 on neutral courts under head coach Matt Painter.
