Carlton Guyton led the way with 17 points as visiting Kent State opened its season with a 70-60 triumph over West Virginia on Tuesday morning.

Justin Greene added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Flashes (1-0), who snapped the Mountaineers' school record 36-game home winning streak against non-conference team.

Kent State, which starts four seniors and a junior, is the favorite to win the Mid-American Conference this season and is one of the stronger mid-major teams in the country. The Golden Flashes showed off their experience in the second half, using an 11-0 run to open up a 47-41 edge with 13:14 remaining.

West Virginia (1-1), which is breaking in six freshman, never regained the lead.

Kent State pushed it to as much as 66-53 on Randal Holt’s jumper with 4:42 remaining and ended up outscoring the Mountaineers, 42-27, in the second half. The Golden Flashes forced 17 turnovers in giving new coach Rob Senderoff his first career win.

Kevin Jones collected 15 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Mountaineers, who shot just 16 of 28 from the free throw line.
