Brockeith Pane scored 12 points, including the go-ahead basket with 3:15 remaining, to help No. 21 Utah State to a 58-54 victory over host New Mexico State on Wednesday.

Tai Wesley added 11 points as Utah State (27-3, 14-1 Western Athletic) held off a New Mexico State upset bid.

Troy Gillenwater scored 17 points for New Mexico State (14-16, 8-7).

Pane’s tiebreaking hoop came during a stretch in which Utah State scored nine straight points to overcome a two-point deficit and take a 56-49 lead with 2:15 to play. Tyler Newbold concluded the run with a 3-point basket.

Newbold and Nate Bendall scored 10 points apiece for Utah State.

Utah State led 33-24 after Wesley’s basket with 16 minutes remaining, but scored only five points over the next 8 1/2 minutes.

New Mexico State trailed by seven with less than 12 minutes to play before rattling off eight straight points on back-to-back 3-pointers by Gordo Castillo and Tyrone Watson’s driving hoop to take a 37-36 lead with 9:52 remaining.

Two free throws by Gillenwater completed a 19-5 run as New Mexico State took a 43-38 lead with 7:33 left.

Gillenwater became the 27th player in school history to score 1,000 career points.
