Jimmer Fredette struggled from the field and still ended up with 34 points as No. 7 BYU outlasted visiting Colorado State, 84-76, on Wednesday.

Brandon Davies added 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Cougars (26-2, 12-1 Mountain West), who moved back into a tie for first place in the conference with No. 4 San Diego State. The Mountain West regular-season champion will likely be determined this weekend when BYU visits the Aztecs.

Fredette could not find his shot, going 9 of 25 from the floor, but made up for it at the free-throw line by knocking down 14-of-16 chances to keep BYU clear.

The Cougars took a 44-36 lead into the break but came out of the locker room cold, failing to record a field goal over the first 5:31 as the Rams crept to within 48-46. They would keep it within four points until BYU put together a 9-0 spurt midway through the second half.

Andy Ogide scored 25 points for Colorado State (18-9, 8-5), which missed a chance to add a signature win to its at-large resume for the NCAA Tournament.
