Chris Wright's steal just before the final buzzer kept Providence's Marshon Brooks from getting off a potential winning shot, and No. 14 Georgetown held off the Friars for its sixth consecutive victory, 83-81 Saturday at Verizon Center.

The Hoyas (18-5, 7-4 Big East) never trailed and led by as many as 20 early in the second half. But Brooks almost single-handedly kept the Friars in it with 43 points, helping Providence close to within one in the final minute. Brooks was 17 for 28 from the field for the Friars.

Georgetown built a 46-34 halftime lead with red-hot 3-point shooting, going 8 for 15 from long range in the first half. But the Hoyas were 0 for 9 from beyond the arc in the second half. They also struggled from the foul line, going 15 for 27 overall, but they hit 8 of 10 down the stretch to survive Providence's upset bid.

Austin Freeman scored 23 points to lead four Hoyas in double figures. Jason Clark added 18, Wright scored 16, and Julian Vaughn had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Providence (14-10, 3-8 Big East) has not won a Big East road game in more than a year. The Hoyas have won five straight against the Friars.
