The Boilermakers (16-3, 5-1 Big Ten) led 56-50 before the Nittany Lions reeled off seven straight points to briefly pull ahead with 3:26 remaining. Purdue regained the upper hand on a basket by E'Twaun Moore, but David Jackson hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining to give Penn State a 62-61 lead before Johnson stepped into the hero's role.
