Tristan Thompson wasn’t about to let Texas become an upset victim on New Year’s Eve.

His dunk with 12 minutes and 21 seconds to go in the second half sparked 8-0 Longhorn run, and 14th-ranked Texas cruised to a 95-75 win over Coppin State Friday at the Erwin Center in Austin.

Texas (12-2) had a 41-30 lead at halftime, but Coppin State (4-8) battled back and tied the score at 52-52 off a four-point play by Tony Gallo. He was fouled on a successful three and made the free throw to tie things up, but Thompson’s dunk sent the Longhorns on their run of eight unanswered points.

Texas dominated Coppin State 47-17 on the boards, including 22 offensive rebounds. Both teams were successful from 3-point range. Coppin State shot 13-of-27 (48.1 percent) from the perimeter, while Texas was 13-of-29 (44.8 percent).

Jordan Hamilton scored 24 points, including five 3-pointers, for Texas. Thompson finished with 22 points and nine rebounds.

Gallo scored 18 points to pace Coppin State, and Michael Harper added 18 points.
