Penn State may have got caught looking ahead, and Maine took advantage.

Murphy Burnatowski scored 20 points to lead the visiting Black Bears to a 74-64 upset of the Nittany Lions Tuesday in University Park, Pa.

Penn State, which opens Big Ten play at Indiana Monday, fell behind early and wasn't able to catch up. Maine led by seven at halftime and extended its lead to double-digits early in the second half.

The Nittany Lions got within eight twice with less than 10 minutes to play but couldn't string together enough baskets to mount a serious comeback.

Talor Battle led Penn State (7-4) with 26 points. Battle needs to average just over 20 points per game in the final 19 games to break the Penn State all-time scoring mark, which has stood for 55 years.

David Jackson added 18 for the Nittany Lions, who shot just 36 percent from the field.

In contrast, Maine shot 52 percent, including hitting 11-of-19 3-pointers. Burnatowski, who is averaging 9.7 points per game, hit five 3-pointers on his way to a season-high output. Terrance Mitchell came off the bench to add 17 for the Black Bears (6-5).
