Any player can grab fleeting attention with the right slam dunk. When a freshman playing his third college game hits four in one night, the attention will likely linger.

Baylor’s Perry Jones III did just that on Thursday, making all the right show-stopping shots to lead the 17th-ranked Bears to a 63-49 win against Jackson State.

The 6-11 forward averaged a near double-double through his first two games, at 11.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. His 20 points and eight rebounds led Baylor (3-0) against the Knights.

Jones made back-to-back jumpers early in the game to give Baylor a 7-3 lead after 3 1/2 minutes. His three-point play off a dunk minutes later pushed the edge to 12-5. And when Jackson State’s Jenirro Bush made a 3-pointer to cut Baylor’s lead to eight points with 2:24 remaining, Jones hit a key jump shot on the next possession to keep the lead in double digits. Jones added another jam before halftime and opened the scoring in the second half with another dunk to provide a 36-26 lead.

Yet Jones wasn’t the top scorer in the game. That honor went to Tigers guard Rod Melvin, whose 22 points on 6-of-7 3-point shooting failed to carry a team which had nobody else score more than seven points.

A.J. Walton added 14 points, five assists and four steals for Baylor, which overcame 26 turnovers by shooting 18-of-34 from the field and holding a 23-4 edge in points at the line.

Baylor is back in action Monday against Lipscomb, but it will be tough for Jones to get attention again. That game will mark the season debut of guard LaceDarius Dunn, Baylor’s top returning player who has been serving a three-game suspension.
