With a suffocating defensive effort, Georgia Tech opened its season Friday with a 52-39 win over Charleston Southern.

The Yellow Jackets held the Buccaneers to 28 percent shooting (14-of-50) from the field. Charleston Southern hit just 4-of-22 from beyond the arc.

Georgia Tech, which lost its entire frontcourt from last season to the NBA, also struggled, shooting 29.8 percent. But sophomore point guard Mfon Udofia managed 12 points, and sophomore guard Glen Rice Jr. and sophomore forward Brian Oliver added 11 each.

Johnathan Brooks led Charleston Southern with 14 points.

The Yellow Jackets led 23-13 after a first half in which they held Charleston Southern to 25 percent shooting (6-of-24).
