SALT LAKE CITY -- Considering the Utah Jazz were without their best player and were depending on a fill-in starter who usually doesn't score, a point guard who recently joined the team and a rookie, things turned out extremely well for them Thursday night.

Rookie Trey Lyles scored 17 points off the bench, and the Jazz won their fourth consecutive game, obliterating the Phoenix Suns 103-69.

Utah (33-35) moved within one game of the idle Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets for the final playoff spot in the West despite playing without leading scorer Gordon Hayward for the second straight game.

"It obviously shows that no matter who's in or out, who's playing, we've got a team that guys can step up and play and help," said small forward Joe Ingles, who played well as Hayward's starting replacement for the second game in a row.

"We've had that 'next man up' mentality. Obviously, Gordon's a huge piece of what we do, but everyone played really well tonight as a team."

Phoenix's point total was the lowest for a Utah opponent this season. The previous low was 71 by the Philadelphia 76ers on Oct. 30. It was also the largest margin of victory for Utah, topping 29-point win over the Charlotte Hornets on Jan. 27.

Shelvin Mack, picked up in a trade on deadline day last month, continued his strong play of late for the Jazz. He flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 15 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Ingles, who also started in Utah's win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday, had a season-high 15 points and a career-high six steals. Rudy Gobert added nine points, 16 rebounds and three blocks.

"We are a team. Someone else steps up when we play," Mack said. "Joe played great tonight. Gordon is a big part of our team, so it takes a full group of everyone to step up."

Brandon Knight led the Suns with 17 points, and Jon Leuer chipped in 14, but Phoenix (18-50) lost for the fourth time in five games.

"We played passive-aggressive in the first half," Suns interim coach Earl Watson said. "In the second half, we played timid. We couldn't hit a shot. We couldn't stop their runs, and we buckled down the stretch. That's not acceptable. That can't happen."

The Jazz held the Suns to 31 points in the second half and 34.1 percent shooting overall.

Utah blew it open by beginning the second half with a 10-0 run. Ingles started the spurt off with a 3-pointer, and Utah held a comfortable 56-38 after Derrick Favors (12 points) hit a short jumper.

The Jazz, who turned their season around after losing 10 of 13 games recently, finished strong by outscoring Phoenix 32-15 in the fourth quarter.

"That's where I think our focus has been, and we have to strive and make every possession hard," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said of his team's defense. "When you do that, there are going to be stretches where you can hold teams from getting baskets, and it's collective and it basically means nobody broke down."

Next up for the Jazz is a tough five-game road trip, beginning Saturday in Chicago. The Suns play the Lakers in Los Angeles on Friday.

NOTES: Jazz SG Gordon Hayward missed his second game with plantar fasciitis in his right foot after not missing any action in the first 66 games. "He's played with this for a while and it may never completely be better," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. "But there is a point where you become ineffective because of the pain. He's reached that point and is still at that point right now." ... Suns interim coach Earl Watson said he had a vision for SG Devin Booker when he worked with the rookie as an assistant this season. "Handling the ball was one of those visions we talked about. He accepted it and he worked on it and grew." ... The Jazz wore their green road jerseys to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. ... Watson played for Utah near the end of his NBA career. He averaged 3.3 points and 3.8 assists in a backup point guard role from 2010-13.
