Bulls 96, Timberwolves 89: Jimmy Butler racked up 28 points and 12 rebounds to help host Chicago hold off Minnesota.

Mike Dunleavy added 21 points and eight rebounds for the Bulls, who outscored the Timberwolves 48-16 in the paint despite playing without center Pau Gasol because of illness. Joakim Noah collected 11 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists and Tony Snell added 12 points off the bench for Chicago.

Kevin Martin scored 18 points and Ricky Rubio added 15 points, 10 assists and six rebounds for the Timberwolves, who were 2-of-14 from 3-point range. Andrew Wiggins scored 14 points and Nikola Pekovic tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Timberwolves scored the first seven points of the third quarter to pull even, but Chicago established a double-digit lead later in the period before settling for a 73-67 lead entering the fourth. Wiggins hit a jumper to cap a 6-0 spurt and give Minnesota an 85-84 lead with 5:09 left, but Hinrich answered and Dunleavy nailed a 3-pointer and Chicago didn't trail again.

The Bulls led by seven early but couldn't maintain much of an offensive rhythm. Minnesota closed the gap and pulled ahead on Gary Neal's three-point play with 6:28 left in the half, but Dunleavy scored 11 points in the final 4:39 of the half as Chicago surged to a 51-44 lead at the break.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Bulls PG Derrick Rose underwent surgery on his torn meniscus Friday and is expected to return in a limited role before the end of the season. … Minnesota PF Kevin Garnett (rest) did not play. … Bulls PF Taj Gibson left late in the first quarter with a left ankle injury.
