Pelicans 97, Spurs 90: Anthony Davis had 22 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks as New Orleans beat visiting San Antonio for the second time this season.
Ryan Anderson also scored 22 points while grabbing seven rebounds in a reserve role for the Pelicans, who improved to 2-0 against the Spurs this season after coming in 9-35 all-time in the series. Jrue Holiday added 15 points and seven assists and Austin Rivers finished with 12 points off the bench for New Orleans.
Cory Joseph scored a career-high 20 points and Tim Duncan finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds for San Antonio, which played without leading scorer Tony Parker (hamstring strain). Marco Belinelli scored 13 off the bench, Manu Ginobili had 12 and fellow reserve Boris Diaw contributed 10 points and six rebounds for the Spurs, who have lost six of seven.
The Spurs led by six at the start of the second quarter before the Pelicans took their own six-point lead later in the quarter thanks to a 7-0 run, and they stayed ahead by four at the half. San Antonio got within one twice in the third quarter but couldn’t wrestle the lead from the Pelicans, who took a six-point advantage into the fourth.
The Spurs tried to stay with New Orleans early in the fourth but went three minutes without scoring and the Pelicans scored six straight points to take an 83-72 lead with 6:45 remaining. New Orleans hit a lull after going up by 12 with 5:26 remaining, but Holiday pulled the Pelicans out with a driving layup with 2:16 on the clock and the Pelicans were back up by eight.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Spurs have lost their last five games when Parker is out. … Davis, a 77.9 percent career free throw shooter coming into the game, shot 6-for-6 from the stripe and is shooting 88 percent from the line in the last nine games. … Joseph’s previous career high was 18, achieved three times during 2014.
