Timberwolves 92, Kings 80:
J.J. Barea collected 21 points, five assists and four rebounds off the bench as host Minnesota overcame a tough shooting night to down Sacramento.

Andrei Kirilenko and Brandon Roy scored 10 points apiece in their respective returns to the NBA for the Timberwolves, who will play the first six weeks of the season without All-Star Kevin Love (broken hand).

The Kings were within 77-76 after Jason Thompson’s free throws with 5:52 left but missed their next five field goal attempts as Minnesota took control. Roy and Barea each scored during an 8-0 run over the next 2:58 and Barea buried a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left that put the game away.

The Timberwolves shot just 37 percent from the field but the Kings were even worse, hitting 32 of 89 (36 percent) from the floor. Isaiah Thomas led the way with 20 points and Marcus Thornton added 15 off the bench for Sacramento.

Minnesota grabbed an early lead in the first quarter and controlled the pace the rest of the way. Kirilenko scored six points during the 18-8 burst to open the contest.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Roy retired prior to the 2011-12 season due to chronic knee problems but decided to return as a member of the Timberwolves in 2012-13. He shot 4 of 14 from the field in 30 minutes. Kirilenko, who played overseas last season, connected on 4 of 7 in 30 minutes. … Minnesota shot 2 for 17 from 3-point range. … Sacramento was outrebounded 53-43, and DeMarcus Cousins was limited to four boards.
