Dirk Nowitzki had 29 points as the Dallas Mavericks moved within a victory of their first championship with a 112-103 win over the visiting Miami Heat in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Thursday.

The Mavericks shot better than 56 percent for the game while taking advantage of a hip injury to Miami's Dwyane Wade, who led the Heat with 23 points but was hobbled throughout the night.

Jason Terry added 21 points in a reserve role while J.J. Barea chipped in with 17 points for the Mavericks, who hit 13 of 19 3-point attempts. Dallas leads the series 3-2 and can wrap things up with a win Sunday night in Miami.

LeBron James, who called Thursday's game the biggest of his career, notched a triple double (17 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) but scored just two points in the fourth quarter after being held scoreless in the final period of Game 4.

Wade was injured after ramming into Brian Cardinal while driving to the hoop with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. After a stoppage, he left the court holding his hip and fell to the court before being helped to the back.

With Wade on the bench to start the second half, the teams continued their hot shooting after a high-octane first 24 minutes. Barea hit a long 3-pointer from the top of the arc and Nowitzki added a high arcing 3-pointer moments later to put Dallas up 70-65.

Barea added another 3-pointer and a driving 12-foot jumper by the halfway point of the quarter as the lead grew to six. Wade returned to the floor with 4 1/2 minutes left, and point guard Jason Kidd greeted him with a wide-open 3 as the Mavericks forged an 84-79 advantage entering the fourth.

Miami whittled away at the lead, drawing to within one on a Wade fast-break layup at the midway point of the quarter. Wade then found Udonis Haslem for an uncontested dunk before connecting on a 3-pointer to give the Heat a 99-95 edge.

A Terry 3-pointer knotted the game with just over three minutes left, and Nowitzki restored Dallas' lead with a driving baseline dunk on the next possession. Kidd then buried the dagger with 1:26 remaining, knocking down the Mavericks' 12th 3-pointer of the game.
