Matt Shoemaker pitched seven two-hit innings, Freddy Galvis drove in two runs with a single in a four-run fourth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Detroit Tigers 6-0 on Friday night for their first win of the season.

It was also the first major league win as manager for Charlie Montoyo.

Shoemaker (1-0), signed in the offseason after a forearm injury hampered him the past two seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, was superb in his Blue Jays debut.

The right-hander held the Tigers to a double and a triple by Nicholas Castellanos and two walks while striking out seven.

Javy Guerra pitched two perfect relief innings for Toronto.

Detroit starter Matthew Boyd (0-1) struck out 10 in five innings. He gave up five hits, one walk and four runs (three earned).

The Blue Jays wasted an opportunity in the first inning after Brandon Drury led off with a triple, as Boyd struck out the next three batters.

Toronto did break through in the fourth, however. Randal Grichuk led off with a walk, Justin Smoak singled and Teoscar Hernandez hit an RBI single to end the Blue Jays' club record of 13 innings without a run to open a season, surpassing 12 scoreless innings to open the 2004 season.

After Boyd got two outs, Billy McKinney hit an infield single to the pitcher, loading the bases. Galvis then singled to center to score two runs, and a third run crossed the plate on an error by center fielder Mikie Mahtook.

Detroit got a one-out triple to left by Castellanos in the sixth, the result of a mistimed leap at the wall by Hernandez. A potential rally was snuffed, however, when Castellanos was out at home after a rundown when Miguel Cabrera grounded to shortstop.

The Blue Jays added a run in the seven against Blaine Hardy. Galvis led off with a single, Luke Maile walked and Smoak delivered a two-out single that scored both runners.

Guerra replaced Shoemaker and set the Tigers down in order with one strikeout in the eighth inning.

The right-hander returned for the ninth and again set the Tigers down in order with one strikeout.
