Royals 9, Phillies 8: Billy Butler hit a grand slam and finished with a franchise record-tying seven RBIs as visiting Kansas City held off a furious rally to take two of three in the first interleague series of the season for both teams.

Butler had an RBI groundout in the third, the first grand slam of his career in the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth as the Royals hammered star lefty Cole Hamels, who gave up a career-high eight earned runs. Alex Gordon had three hits, three runs and an RBI for Kansas City, which nearly blew a five-run lead in the ninth.

James Shields (1-1) gave up four runs in the first inning but none in the next five to pick up his first win in a Royals uniform. Shields struck out eight, did not issue a walk and also singled and scored on Butler's base hit in the sixth, which made it 8-4.

Hamels (0-2), who was dinged for five runs in five innings in his season debut Monday in Atlanta, gave up nine hits in 5 2/3 frames in his second outing. He walked four and struck out two in matching the earned-run total he gave up in four starts last April.

Michael Young was 4-for-5 and had one of three RBI singles during the Phillies' four-run first. Jimmy Rollins slugged a three-run homer in the ninth and Laynce Nix added a run-scoring single before Kelvin Herrera struck out Erik Kratz with two men in scoring position to pick up his first save of the season.

GAME NOTEBOOK
: Several Royals have recorded seven RBIs in a game, the last being Jose Guillen in 2008. ... Hamels had given up seven earned runs six times in his career. ... Greg Holland, who blew the save Saturday night, was lifted in favor of Herrera after giving up two singles with two outs in the ninth.
