Matt Olson and Mark Canha hit first-inning home runs off Domingo German, and Homer Bailey pitched effectively into the sixth Tuesday night, helping the Oakland Athletics open a three-game series against the visiting New York Yankees with a 6-2 victory.

In their first meeting since the 2018 American League wild-card game, which New York won 7-2, the A's sent the Yankees to their second straight defeat while winning for the fourth time in five outings on their eight-game homestand.

After Gary Sanchez homered off Bailey (11-8), a solo shot that was his 28th of the season, with two outs in the top of the first inning, the A's came right back.

Robbie Grossman's walk set up Olson's two-run homer, his 26th of the season, before Canha followed with his 19th for a 3-1 lead.

The A's built the advantage to 4-1 on a Marcus Semien RBI double in the second, then to 6-1 in the sixth on an RBI single by Stephen Piscotty that Cameron Maybin misplayed in left field, allowing a second run to score.

Seeking an eighth straight win, German (16-3) was pulled after Piscotty's hit, charged with six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out seven.

The loss was German's first since June 7. He was making his first career start in Oakland.

Aaron Judge, a Northern California native making his annual homecoming, capped the game's scoring with a leadoff home run in the eighth inning, his 13th of the season.

Bailey, who beat the Yankees for the Kansas City Royals earlier in the season, worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run and seven hits. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

Olson, Canha and Semien had two hits apiece for Oakland, which recorded a fifth win in its past six games. Olson and Canha each scored twice.

Gio Urshela, Didi Gregorius and Mike Tauchman collected a pair of his apiece for the Yankees, who out-hit the A's 11-9.
