Yonny Chirinos threw a career-high eight shutout innings, while Kevin Kiermaier homered and had four RBIs as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the host Boston Red Sox 5-1 to kick off a four-game series Friday.

Chirinos (7-2) was perfect through the first five innings before escaping a bases-loaded jam in the sixth on his way to the win. He gave up two hits, walked two, struck out six and threw 101 pitches, another career high.

Ji-Man Choi drove in the other Rays run on a solo homer as Tampa Bay won its third straight while ending Boston's winning streak at four games.

Chirinos retired the first 15 men he faced, 10 on the ground. But Brock Holt walked to begin the sixth, and Jackie Bradley Jr. followed with a single as the Red Sox finally posed a threat.

Pinch hitter Christian Vazquez flied out before Mookie Betts walked to load the bases. Chirinos escaped the jam by retiring two of Boston's hottest hitters -- Andrew Benintendi and Rafael Devers -- on strikes.

Chirinos would allow just a single over the next two innings before ceding the ninth to Emilio Pagan, who gave up an RBI double to Xander Bogaerts before finishing the game.

The Rays got on the board in the second inning off Red Sox starter Rick Porcello when Choi lofted a fly ball to right field that the wind carried into the Boston bullpen for a 1-0 lead. Tampa scored two more in the fourth on a two-run single by Kiermaier with two outs.

Kiermaier struck again with an RBI single in the sixth before Porcello ended his night by escaping a two-on, two-out jam. Porcello (4-6) gave up four runs on eight hits in his six innings, striking out four.

Mike Shawaryn made his major league debut in relief for the Red Sox. He struck out four in two innings, but Kiermaier got him for a solo homer in the ninth, his career-high-tying fourth RBI.

Boston first baseman Mitch Moreland, who returned from a stint on the injured list with a lower back injury earlier in the day, exited in the top of the seventh with right quad tightness. He was replaced by Michael Chavis.

J.D. Martinez (back spasms) was out of the lineup for the Red Sox.
