Eric Thames and Orlando Arcia drove in two runs each in a five-run third inning and the visiting Milwaukee Brewers spoiled the return of New York Mets starter Jacob deGrom with a 10-2 victory in the opener of a three-game series on Friday night.

Lorenzo Cain had two hits and three RBIs, Mike Moustakas had two hits and two RBIs, and Christian Yelich also had two hits for the Brewers, who ended a four-game losing streak.

After a nearly three-hour rain delay, deGrom (2-3) made his first pitch shortly before 10 p.m. ET. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner went on the injured list last week after experiencing elbow discomfort. He went four innings, allowing five runs and five hits, striking out seven, walking three and hitting two batters on 89 pitches.

Brewers starter Chase Anderson was up 9-1 to start the fifth inning, but was unable to secure the final out to earn the win.

Anderson allowed two runs and five hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Matt Albers (2-1) followed Anderson with 1 1/3 shutout innings.

The Brewers loaded the bases with one out off deGrom in the second and third innings. He escaped the second by striking out Anderson and Cain, but couldn't escape the third.

Yelich, who came in hitting 14-for-32 off deGrom in his career, led off the third with an infield single. He stole second for the second time in the game, and came home on a single to right by Moustakas for a 1-0 lead.

For the second straight inning, deGrom hit a batter and walked a batter in consecutive at-bats to load the bases. Thames made him pay the second time by doubling to right to score two runs.

Arcia followed with a two-run single to score two more and make it 5-0.

The Mets scored a run in the fourth on a two-out single by Todd Frazier, but Cain doubled in three runs in the fifth for an 8-1 lead. Yelich followed with a single to center to drive in Cain and up the lead to 9-1.

Jeff McNeil, Brandon Nimmo and Robinson Cano had two hits each for the Mets.
